Good Girl, Bad Blood is a compelling, page-turning sequel. With just as much suspense and as many twists and turns, I loved following Pip and Co. again as they once again unravel a local mystery. I love the subtle ways it builds on the previous one, albeit mostly in the sense of the community connections, as well as continued coverage of the aftermath of the previous case. There is some exposition at the beginning to catch you up on what happened, which I appreciated, even though I read the first relatively recently. However, while you do get a fairly succinct recap of the prior book’s events to start this one off, it is still recommended you read in order.

I continue to enjoy how Pip is drawn to helping those she is close to in finding answers when the worst happens. She starts off the book certain that the previous case was a one-off, with only the loose ends of the trials for the perpetrators to be covered. But along with dealing with her rage at the way justice is not served (I cheered when she did certain reckless things in response, even though I knew she’d get in trouble), she remains curious when something else mysterious happens, and I loved how she defended her case to her mom. While, yes, her life was in danger the first time, and she does engage in some life-threatening behavior again this time around, she does it for good reasons both times.

And the mystery itself is super engaging. Like the first one, it’s multilayered, and the more you peel or scratch at it, there’s clues, as well as more questions. Once again, there’s a moral ambiguity at the center of the case, with issues of child abuse and the question of culpability of the abused in crimes when they assist in perpetrating them, as well as the results of vigilante justice.

I continue to love the multimedia presentation of the books, with clippings of blog posts and news articles, as well as excerpts from Pip’s notes. These are most definitely the best part of the book, immersing me in the experience of solving the case along with her.

This is another incredible installment in the series, and I’m hyped to pick up the third one relatively soon. If you enjoyed the first, but haven’t picked up this one yet, you definitely should!

Holly Jackson started writing stories at a young age, completing her first (poor) attempt at a novel when she was fifteen. She graduated from the University of Nottingham, where she studied literary linguistics and creative writing, with a master’s degree in English. She enjoys playing video games and watching true-crime documentaries so she can pretend to be a detective. She lives in London. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is her debut novel.
